On the long list of things that I didn't know about Chicago before I moved here, Chicago likes its fried chicken sandwiches (correction, LOVES them). These are just a few of our favorites:
The Classic: The Roister Restaurant
Fried Chicken Sandwich
with sunchoke hot sauce and chamomile mayo
We like to try everything, so we always order two different items off the menu and split. We've made this mistake too many times with this sandwich. Next time, we plan to just commit and order two, so no one is left picking the crumbs off the plate (again).
Mexican-style: Copper Fox Gastropub
Crispy Chicken Sandwich with jalapeño vinaigrette, roasted tomato, pickled onion, avocado, cotija cheese, housemade pickle.
This sandwich has a special place in my heart. We found it during our first month after moving to Chicago. The first of many times devouring this combination of spicy, sweet jalapeño flavor and creamy cotija cheese on crispy deliciousness occurred picnic-style on the floor of our brand-new empty apartment. Happy moments! #findinghappyfull
Korean-style: Cafe Integral at the Freehand Hotel
Fried Chicken Sandwich with rosemary honey, gochujang hot sauce and kale on a brioche bun
(WARNING: smells amazing. looks amazing. it never lasts long enough for a picture...seriously. You'll just have to go see it for yourself!)
Yes, it is as heavenly as it sounds. It is a unique twist on the classic. I think this has become Anders's comfort food...in addition to a London Fog tea. Add an order of the Papas Bravas on the side and you won't regret it, I promise. Not only is it delicious, but the Cafe Integral is super cool and electric. Check it out!
Bar Bites: The VIG
Southern Fried Chicken with pickle, mayo, Crystal honey sauce and butter bun
On a beautiful day, we stumbled upon this gem of a sandwich. We were looking for any place with a nice patio, lively atmosphere and cocktails with food quality as an afterthought. We lucked out and got both sun & finger lickin' good southern fried chicken.
Cheapest: Do-Rite Donuts
Fried Chicken Sandwich with pickle, mayo, lettuce, bread & butter pickles
Hits the spot and won't break the bank (only $4.99 for the orginial). If you are craving the classic style but just can't get a reservation at Roister, try this fast-food sandwich with real flavor.
***I think you can only find it at West Loop and Streeterville locations.
Bunless: Doc B's
Tennessee Hot Chicken with habanero-honey glazed & served with coleslaw
Okay, I know this is kind of like cheating because it's technically not a sandwich but I just had to throw this on the list somewhere :) The spicy and sweet combo is so yummy and worth a try. It's definitely one of my favorite things on the menu and a must at happy hour!
Chicken Fried BONUS:
Chicken Fried Rabbit with hoppin john risotto, okra, chicory greens, pancetta and brown butter tabasco
If you haven't been to Dusek's yet, then you are missing out. Delicious gourmet meal with great atmosphere. The crispy chicken flavor with juicy rabbit and creamy sides was a lovely pairing. I dare you to not lick the plate...
There are so many more places to try in Chicago, so I'll update the list as we explore more. Enjoy! #findinghappyfull #foodie #ilovefriedchicken #chicagoflavor #tastetheworld
